Dating

Dating is a part of life. Some might say it is like death and taxes. Well, its not that bad, but it is a serious endeavor for most people, whether they enjoy it or dread it. Just to be clear, for this discussion, I want to define dating as the activities leading up to but not including relationship. When a relationship starts is sometimes not clearly defined, but we can assume that when a couple is not seeing other people, they are no longer dating and are in a relationship.

Recently the options for people who date have increased. Within the last ten years we have seen the advent of Internet dating. One can join specific niche dating sites for everything from singles into sports to spiritual dating. Off-line we have also seen so called "Speed Dating" and activity dating organized by groups or companies that bring people together around a central theme, such as dining or recreational activities. Older people are dating more than ever before. This is mainly due changing social trends and attitudes. Divorce is more prevalent and remarriage is not frowned upon as it was long ago.

This state of flux, while providing more options for people, is also the cause of confusion. In many cases there are no clear rules as to how to behave. For example, many times women do not know how to gracefully decline an offer for a date from a man. They resort to making excuses in many cases. In the past, when arrangements by third parties was common, this uncomfortable situation was avoided. In the United States, we also have the problem of mixing many different cultures and customs. This often causes misunderstandings and other problems.
