Singles

Single was once a word that spelled failure in relationship and conjured the image of old maids and smokey bearded middle aged men that were passed up when the wives were meeted out. Now, of course, anyone can be single either by choice or circumstance. Some even prefer the free state of single-dom. When you are single, the possibilities are endless and there is a sense of adventure. Relationships bring security, certainty, and often times, unfortunately hum-drum. This dicotomy is probably the explanation for the extremely high incidence of "cheating" and affairs that plague both sides of the sexual divide. Many people want "their cake and eat it too" by staying in a secure relationship while still opting for some adventure and excitement when they can by playing the singles game.

Now that we are in the 21st Century, many things are changing, including how we view human interaction and relationship. Singles have more social freedom than in the past. The "post" is more respectable. It is almost "okay" to be single. To be sure there is still peer and family pressure to "settle down" or at least have a significant other. But it is considered okay to be divorced, or single for a time after a long relationship.

With the changing times, singles have many opportunities to find someone and abandon the post of single-dom. There are a dizzying number of Web sites that promise to hook you up with your soulmate, your most compatible partner based on a set of psychological parameters, or maybe just someone to have sex with. There are telephone chat lines for friendship to sexual encounters. Major cities have activity clubs, speed dating and specialized matchmaking services. And let's not forget the more traditional ways of find a mate, like meeting through friends and striking up a conversation with a stranger in a bar or public place.
